Hackers vs. Web Browsers

CanSecWest recently held a hacking contest and the results are now in. The “hackers successfully compromised fully patched Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers with exploits that required the local user to load a malicious website,” says CanSecWest. All of the web browsers lost, except for Google Chrome.

One of the hackers, Charlie Miller, was said to have taken down the Apple Safari browser on a Mac in 10 seconds flat. He later admitted to having the exploit in mind since the contest prior to this one but since he could only win one time, he decided to keep it on the down-low until the next contest.

Even if web browsers were completely invulnerable, it would never stop malicious hackers and malware, because the web browsers are not the problem. The problem is the end-users that intentionally install the malware! Read more here.

Tech Toys

We were curious about what kind of tech toys the rest of the world likes (meaning the non-hard-core- techies) and found HGTV’s favorite tech toys to make any home more high-style and high-tech:

Logitech Harmony 890 Remote Control - This remote control actually does what universal remotes should do. The Logitech Harmony can replace up to 15 remote controls, from DVD players to projectors to automated home lighting controls and uses one-touch controls and radio frequency rather than just infrared, so you can turn your electronics on without having to point the remote directly toward them. The linked page mentions you can also hide your equipment behind closed cabinet doors and still turn everything on, but then how do you see through closed doors?

Samsung Blu-Ray Players - If your thing is movies, you should look Samsung’s collection of these. HGTV quoted the BD-P1000 at $1,000 but now Samsung has added a few more players to their collection and have dropped their prices to somewhere between $300-600, depending on the model. The BD-P4600 blu-ray disc player is Wi-Fi ready and has Netflix/Pandora streaming and it’s easily mountable at just 1.5” thick. Now that’s high-tech with style.
